Economics of Fish Farming in Ibadan Metropolis

Abstract
The study assesses the economics offishfarming in lbadan Metropolis. The datafbr the study were collectedfrom
50fishfnrmers with the aid ofstructured questionnaires. The data were analyses using descriptive, gross margin
and regression techniques.
The study revealed that mostjizrmers had seconda y education and above. Mostfarmers operate at small-scale
level with an average of 3 ponds in this catego y. Fish farmers practiced ply culturefishjizrming. Clarias spp is
the most raisedfish speciesfbllowed by Heteroclarias spp. The gross margin analysis revealed that medium scale
farmers derived the highest return of W1.55for every one naira expended. This isfollowed by iargescale farmers
at W1.52 for eve y one naira compared with only W1.34for every naira spent by small-scalefnrmers. Pixed inputs,
labour,fertilizers,f eeds andfinger lings sign@cantly affect the value offish produced. Fish fanners under utilize
both labour and fertilizers whilefeeds andfinger lings are over utilized.
